Hot Rod Honey (Roadster) came from off the pace and drew clear late to become the first black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Quality Road) in Friday's Sharp Susan Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
A 1 1/4-length debut winner against state-breds at this venue on June 5, the $27,000 Keeneland November weanlng went off as the 2-1 second choice here.
Away cleanly from the rail gate, Hot Rod Honey chased longshot Columbina (Mr. Louise) and favored Boots (Brethren) up the backstretch. Hot Rod Honey put away the chalk around the far turn, then began to come for the pacesetter. The Carlos David dropped down to the rail in the stretch, turned up the pressure inside the final furlong and made off with the money.
The first foal for her unraced dam, Hot Rod Honey has a pair of younger full-siblings with the latest being a colt foaled Mar. 17. Go Together is a half-sister to SW Oh So Regal (Sidney's Candy) and part of an extended female family which includes GSW Varenka (Ghostzapper).
Roadster had a pair of new winners on the day, which brought his overall tally to five.
