'He'll Handle Keeneland Well': Weld Eyes BC Turf With Purview

While he didn't dazzle on Sunday as he had last time he was at The Curragh, Juddmonte's Breeders' Cup Turf-bound Purview (Kingman) was still too strong for his rivals in the G3 Dubai Duty Free International Stakes on the Derby undercard.

Sent off the even-money favourite for the 10-furlong contest based on his impressive Orby Stakes success over a mile and a half last month, the Dermot Weld-trained homebred was kept close to the pace by Colin Keane and the writing was already on the wall by the two pole. Kept up to his work as the track specialist Trustyourinstinct (Churchill) stayed on, the gap between the pair that had been six lengths last time was only 3/4 of a length this time, with the winner possibly idling. There was the same margin back to past Group 1 winner Hotazhell (Too Darn Hot) in third.

“I was delighted for the horse and for the owners. Juddmonte have been great supporters of mine and I appreciate the family's support,” Weld said. “He's a very talented colt and he's beginning to fill into the promise that I always thought he would. I think there is a long year ahead of him still and we'll look at different options.

“I've always been thinking that at the end of this year he would come to his peak, so today was only a step along the way. The Irish Champion Stakes is obviously a definite target for him, seeing that he won today. Colin and I were fortunate enough a couple of years ago to win the Breeders Cup Turf and I think he could be a horse for that race. Colin rode him right up on the pace so he's a horse that will handle Keeneland very well.”

“He's entered for the Arc as well,” he added. “The Arc can get very heavy and, as you saw today, he has a nice bit of pace. He's a very smart colt and I still think we have more to come.”

Purview's dam Variable (Sea The Stars), who was also a Listed winner for this stable, is a daughter of the Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Proportional (Beat Hollow) whose other black-type winner was Bated Breath's Group 3 scorer First Instinct. Proportional's full-sister Vote Often also raced for Rosewell House, winning the Park Express Stakes and finishing third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
