Under the tutelage of trainer David Smaga in France, Grand Jete needed a quartet of starts to graduate, accomplishing the feat going a mile at the regional Deauville course Clairfontaine Aug. 12. On the board in two of four subsequent starts in that country–including a handicap on the Chantilly all-weather Oct. 16–she joined the string of Chad Brown and marked her U.S. debut with an emphatic score in a first-level allowance at Keeneland Apr. 13. Amply supported to earn her initial stakes victory, the English bred broke well, but had to take up mildly as the field moved past the stands for the first time, which relegated her to near the back of the pack. Tucked in and moving smoothly through a half in :47.57, she began to make her way forward as the leader carved out six furlongs in 1:11.49. Needing racing room turning for home, she swung out four wide for the stretch drive, jumped enthusiastically into gear and motored home a 1 1/4-length winner. “She was so strong in the post parade,” said winning rider Joe Bravo. “I expected to sit closer than I did, but I knew there were some rapid fillies and they were doing their thing up front. She knew when the race broke, she got us into a good position and made my job really easy. Her turn of foot was huge.”

Pedigree Note:
Grand Jete, who represents the Juddmonte Farms' breeding empire top and bottom, is by the highly successful Juddmonte stallion Dansili and out of homebred Modern Look (GB). Victorious for Prince Khaled Abdullah in the G3 Prix Miesque and the G2 Prix de Sandringham in 2007 and 2008, respectively, the Modern Look subsequently joined Bobby Frankel's string in the U.S. where she finished second in Santa Anita's Moscow Burning S. The 12-year-old mare aborted foals by Dansili and Champs Elysees (GB) in 2015 and 2016, respectively, but successfully produced a filly by Dansili earlier this February year.
