Multiple graded stakes winner Effinex (Mineshaft), recently moved to McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds to take up stud duty in 2018, died suddenly in his stall Wednesday. He was six years old. An autopsy was performed by Rood and Riddle Veterinary Associates, which determined the cause of death was an acute rupture of the pulmonary artery.

“Effinex died very suddenly Wednesday evening in his stall from natural causes,” said Joe McMahon, owner of McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds. “This is a huge personal loss to his owner-breeder Dr. Russell Cohen. He truly loved his horse. The passing of Effinex is also a terrible loss to the New York Thoroughbred breeding community, as well as to all of us at McMahon of Saratoga.

Effinex won nine of 28 starts in his racing career for earnings of $3,312,950, highlighted by his victory in the GI Clark H. in 2015 and runner-up finish at 33-1 to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) in that year's GI Breeders' Cup Classic.
