Found Outslugs Golden Horn in the Turf

Found | Keeneland/Coady

Making her fifth start at her fifth different venue in the span of 69 days, her third start in the month of October and her second in two weeks, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs. John Magnier's Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) rallied outside of G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero and 4-5 favorite Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) into the stretch, dueled with that one into the final furlong and clawed her way past the chalk in the waning strides for a thrilling victory in Saturday's GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland. Big Blue Kitten (Kitten's Joy), whose stablemate raced on as much as a 20-length lead in the middle portions of the race, kept on well, but just couldn't quite quicken with the talented European duo late and settled for third. “She is very tough filly,” commented winning jockey Ryan Moore. “She beat a champion [Golden Horn] and that is special too.”

Winner at two of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc Day 2014, Found was second behind the talented Pleascach (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas May 24 and missed by a neck to Ervedya (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 19. Given a 'breather,' Found drilled her rivals by four lengths in the Aug. 23 G3 Royal Whip S. at The Curragh before running Golden Horn to a length when second in that controversial running of the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown Sept. 12. Hampered a bit when ninth, but beaten only five lengths behind Golden Horn in the Arc, she most recently filled second spot in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot Oct. 17.
In what became an interesting tactical affair owing to the breakaway speed from Shining Copper, Frankie Dettori had Golden Horn settled in third in the opening stages, while Ryan Moore positioned Found in about seventh spot, as Shining Copper's kamikaze mission resulted in a lead of better than 10 lengths crossing under the line with a circuit of the 'good' turf to traverse. Dettori took the decision to get Golden Horn off the inside and into about the three path at the five-furlong pole, but in the meantime, Moore had allowed Found to creep forward a few spots into fourth racing into the final turn. They'd caught up to Shining Copper midway on that bend, and it was Golden Horn to make the first serious bid, but Moore was watching his every move and had Found poised just to his outside at the head of the stretch. Golden Horn turned for home in about the three path, but instead of staying outward from the rail, where the ground was at its easiest, the colt lugged in, but clung to a tenuous advantage up front. Found came to him inside the final sixteenth of a mile, but try as he might, the Derby and Arc winner could not resist the late surge and settled for a gallant runner-up effort. Big Blue Kitten rallied outside the top two into the lane and looked a real chance with a furlong to come, but could not quite match strides late and finished a game third. Found becomes the first 3-year-old filly to win the Turf and is the third winner of the Turf for her sire since 2006.
“I'm absolutely delighted,” said trainer Aidan O'Brien, winning his 10th Breeders' Cup race. “She's a very special mare. To run in two Champion Stakes [Irish and English], an Arc and then to come and win the Breeders' Cup Turf is quite remarkable. She's very special.”
John Gosden was not overly downtrodden in defeat.
“We always knew we were taking a risk running on ground like this that is softer than anything he's run on before,” he explained. “Take nothing away from the winner. She's a very good filly, and the best turf horse in America has finished third, Our horse has run a terrific race on ground that didn't suit him.”
Found's dam, the highweighted 3-year-old filly in Ireland in 2006, won the G1 Matron S. and beat the boys in the G1 Lockinge S. at four, earning English highweight honors. Red Evie is also the dam the stakes-winning filly Best In the World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and produced a full-brother to Found earlier this year.
