Flatter Colt Graduates for Baffert at Santa Anita

Flatter

WEST COAST (c, 3, Flatter–Caressing {Ch. 2yo Filly & GISW, $955,988}, by Honour and Glory) followed up a promising debut with an easy victory over two rivals at Santa Anita. Second to a stablemate going a mile first out in Arcadia Feb. 18 while earning a 91 Beyer Speed Figure, the $425,000 KEESEP grad scared off all the competition, as three of the seven entrants scratched out of the race early, and his task was made easier when second choice Honor and Courage (Unbridled's Song) was a late removal on advice of the track veterinarian. Off with all the money on at 1-20, West Coast came away well and tracked the speed of Fallstar (Speightstown) through a quarter in :23.75. Drawing on even terms with that one past a :47.52 half, the favorite took charge going by six furlongs in 1:11.82 and was shaken up in the final furlong to slam the door on the pacesetter and register a 3 1/4-length success. The winner is a half to Juan and Bina (Indian Charlie), GSP, $178,150. His dam, the Eclipse-winning juvenile filly of 2000, foaled a colt by Carpe Diem Feb. 18. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $43,200.
