Economic Model Kicks Off Belmont Day With Easy Goer Score

Economic Model reaffirmed his affinity for New York racetracks with a score in the Easy Goer S. to begin Belmont day. A first-out winner at the Spa last August, the bay was given a rest for the remainder of 2015 and returned to finish second behind Awesome Banner (Awesome of Course) in Gulfstream's GII Swale S. A non-factor ninth in his first try around two turns in the GII Tampa Bay Derby Mar. 12, he recently regained winning form with a comfortable four-length tally going a mile in the slop in Elmont May 4. Sent postward as the third choice here, the $150,000 KEESEP yearling secured a spot tracking the pace as a trio of rivals–including 4-5 favorite Cupid (Tapit)–sparred through a half-mile in :46.05. Searching for a seam turning for home, he split horses as Cupid faltered, dove to the rail and strode clear to score by a comfortable margin over Race Me Home (Ire). Cupid faded to finish fifth. “We've always liked this horse a lot,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “His race at Tampa was just so disappointing, but it is becoming clear now it was just the track over there. I've never lost confidence in this horse stretching out as well. He's always acted like a horse who wants to run further. We'll stretch out from here. I will talk to the owners about it, but I would say the [GII] Jim Dandy [at Saratoga July 30] or [GI betfair.com] Haskell [Invitational at Monmouth Park July 31]are likely.” Queen of America foaled a colt by Orb in 2015.
