Straight Fire, second to a 'TDN Rising Star' in his debut, earned the same honor with a jaw-dropping maiden romp at Del Mar. Showing good speed in his debut by the shore July 17, he dueled with favored Chasing Aces (Flatter) that day before succumbing in the stretch to finish second as the winner went off to score by 5 1/4 lengths with a 101 Beyer, the highest number awarded to a juvenile so far this season. Bet down to 9-10 in this spot, the imposing bay broke like a shot and sped off to a clear lead through a :21.76 while staying well off the rail. Opening up by five past a half in :44.38, the only question from there was how far, as Straight Fire straight crushed the competition by 11 lengths under minimal urging in 1:14.94. Straight Fire is the second winner for his freshman sire (by Smart Strike) and was the most expensive yearling of 19 sold from his sire's crop last year. The winner's dam is a half to MGSW Confide (Phone Trick), while his third dam is MGSW/GISP Quixotic Lady (Quadratic), a half-sister to MGISW and 1980's Champion 2-year-old filly Heavenly Cause (Grey Dawn II). Tricky Indy is responsible for a yearling filly by Jimmy Creed and a weanling filly by Zong. Sales History: $250,000 Ylg '15 FTKJUL. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $50,400.
