John Gunther and Eurowest Bloodstock Services' Deep Satin (American Pharoah), who closed to within a half-length third in Saturday's GII Ballston Spa Stakes at Saratoga, is possible to step up to Grade I company for her next start, according to Cherie DeVaux.
“She came out of the race very good and looks great this morning,” trainer Cherie DeVaux said on Sunday. “Maybe [Keeneland's GI] First Lady.”
The one-mile First Lady is scheduled for Oct. 3.
In 2025, the bay as a 1 1/2-length second in the Ballston Spa before finishing a half-length back in fourth in the First Lady.
In last weekend's Ballston Spa, Deep Satin finished less than won by the pacesetting And One More Time (Omaha Beach), who finished a neck ahead of forwardly-placed Sunlit Uplands (Ire) (Sands of Mali (Fr).
“Jose rode a really great race,” said DeVaux. “Looking at the head-on, it was hard for her to engage [late] because the other horses were so far away from her, but she ran a great race. We're really pleased with her.”
Golden Tempo Baby Brother Nears Debut
DeVaux also provided an update regarding 2-year-old colt Imperial Tempo (Nyquist), a younger half-brother to dual Classic winner Golden Tempo, bred by Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stables.
The bay is approaching his debut following weekly works beginning in late June at Keeneland.
“He's coming along well,” DeVaux said. “Probably a start at the upcoming Churchill [Downs] meet.
“I try not to compare them,” DeVaux added while facing her GI Travers contender Golden Tempo. “They're two different horses, but he [Imperial Tempo] has the same personality: really professional. But I think it is fair to treat them as individuals and not compare them.”
