Deep Impact Colt Salutes at Nakayama

Satono Flag (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) won his third consecutive race in the 2000-metre G2 Hochi Hai Yahoi Sho Deep Impact Kinen at Nakayama on Sunday. The 9-5 second choice's closing effort earned him his first black-type rosette in a race named for his late sire, who passed away last July.

Away awkwardly, the bay raced fourth last through the early stages as Win Carnelian (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) set the pace. Positions were largely unchanged through the first 1000 metres in 1:01.10. Oro Adone (Jpn) (Epiphan) made his bid for the lead just before the final corner, but Satono Flag was making in roads toward the front and soon had the new leader in his sights, as a stubborn Win Carnelian also remained in for a piece and Authority (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) began to unwind. Satono Flag found another gear inside the final furlong and dashed away to win by 1 3/4 lengths, as favoured Wakea (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Ire}) closed a half-length better than Authority in third. Win Carnelian faded to eighth.

Sixth at first asking over this trip at Tokyo in October, the Satomi Horse Company runner donned cap and gown there on Nov. 16. He made it two on the bounce over this course and distance on Jan. 5.

Pedigree Notes

A ¥165,000,000 JRHA Select Sale weanling, the winner is the second black-type scorer produced by a daughter of Not for Sale to the cover of Deep Impact after G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies heroine Danon Fantasy (Jpn). He is also the 152nd stakes winner and 126th group winner for the late Shadai Stallion Station resident. The fourth foal and fourth winner for his dam, who struck twice at the highest level in her native land, Satono Flag is followed by a juvenile full-sister. His second dam also produced a brace of Argentinean group winners to the cover of American expats: Le Blues (Arg) (Roman Ruler) won the G1 Polla de Potrillos, while Liriope (Arg) (Honour and Glory) won twice at group level there. His third dam is G1 Premio Carrera de las Estrellas heroine La Baraca (Arg) (Mariache II {Arg}).
