Declaration of War's Eirene Powers to St Hugh's Success

   Eirene, who hit the board going six furlongs and three yards at Yarmouth in her June 13 unveiling, broke through over one yard shorter at Doncaster June 30 before running second over an extended six panels at Nottingham last time Aug. 3, and stepped forward to register a career high in this stakes bow. Restrained at the tail of the far-side group through swift early fractions, she made eyecatching headway from halfway to deliver her bid with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and ran on strongly once taking over at the eighth pole to win going away in impressive fashion. “She bumped into a decent sort [Sands of Mali] at Nottingham and it was very heavy that day over six furlongs,” explained rider Robert Winston. “She just got outstayed on the ground and the drop back to five on soft ground has helped her today. She has always been very highly thought of at home and today was a chance to prove herself in Listed company. I think the long-term goal could be the [Sept. 30 G1] Cheveley Park [S. at Newmarket] and she will get six furlongs when it's not so soft.”

   Eirene, half-sister to a yearling colt by Champs Elysees (GB) and a colt foal by Iffraaj (GB), becomes the second black-type winner for her freshman sire (by War Front) and is the leading performer out of Listed Radley S. second Za Za Zoom (GB) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}). Za Za Zoom is herself a full-sister to Listed Wentworth S. runner-up Highland Colori (Ire) and a half-sister to G3 Chipchase S. victor and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup third Genki (Ire) (Shinko Forest {Ire}).
