Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig), a brilliant racemare and influential broodmare has died at Gestut Wittekindshof in Germany at the age of 22. The mare had only just delivered a filly foal by Maxios (GB), her fourteenth produce in total. Announcing the news Gestut Wittekindshof, who also bred the mare said, “We're proud that our stud farm was Elle Danzig's home for 22 years and we bid farewell to one of the greats.” Elle Danzig was both top class and durable on the race track when trained by Andreas Schutz. She won 12 races from 21 starts including back to back runnings of the G1 Premio Roma in Italy in 1999 and 2000. She rose to prominence as a 3-year-old in Germany in 1998 when she won the G3 German 1000 Guineas and the G2 Preis Der Diana before stepping up for her first of three Group 1 wins in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich. She won five group races that year and ten in total by the time she finished her career when running fifth in the G1 Hong Kong Cup in 2000. Her busy racing schedule proved no hindrance to her career as a broodmare; she missed only one year when barren in 2014 and during the her time at stud she produced eleven winners with seven either winning or placing in stakes races. Her highest achievers are three-time Group 3 winner Elle Shadow (Ire) (Shamardal) and listed winner Elle Gala (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Her stakes placed 2003 produce Elle Galante (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}) has made her own mark as a broodmare being the dam of G2 King Edward VII S. winner Balios (Ire) (Shamardal). Elle Danzig's youngest current runner is the Luca Cumani trained El Vip (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). The 4-year-old won twice last year for owners Al Shaqab Racing and finished third at Bath earlier this week.
