Michael Lund Petersen's Rabeeba kicked into gear late to win the GIII Torrey Pines Stakes going away and take her lifetime record to a perfect three-for-three at Del Mar Sunday. The even-money favorite sat just behind a wall of three pacesetters in a bunched up field through fractions of :23.39 and :46.96. Tipped out three wide for running room approaching the stretch, Rabeeba was niggled on by jockey Juan Hernandez, but looked to be idling as She's No Quant asserted control in upper stretch. Rabeeba eventually found her best stride inside the final furlong and sailed on by to win by 2 1/4 lengths.
“She's never been behind horses and she didn't break that well, so [Hernandez] didn't want to send her out there and go too fast,” said winning trainer Bob Baffert. “She's learning. We've been taking baby steps with her. She's a big filly and Juan said he had to get her in gear again, so it shows the class is there. She was running against an experienced, nice group of fillies here.”
Hernandez added, “This filly was a little green. She got dirt in her face for the first time and I don't think she liked it. She's a big filly and she wanted to go today. I had to work with her to get here in the right spots, but in the end it was OK.”
A debut winner going 6 1/2 furlongs at Los Alamitos June 19, Rabeeba was most recently a front-running winner of a July 26 optional claimer over the Torrey Pine's track and distance.
Pedigree Notes:
Rabeeba, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Air Force Blue (War Front), was purchased for $750,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September sale. Her dam, Chatham, who was purchased by Arthur Hancock as a 5-year-old for $190,000 at the 2009 Keeneland November sale, produced a colt by Good Magic in 2025, had no foal in 2026, and was bred back to Twirling Candy.
Juddmonte purchased Rabeeba's 2-year-old full-brother for $450,000 at this year's OBS April sale. Named Stone Aged, the chestnut was sixth in his 6 1/2-furlong debut at Saratoga Aug. 8.
The winner's third dam, Starlet Storm (Storm Bird), produced champion Flanders (Seeking the Gold), the dam of champion Surfside.
