Curlin’s Lady Apple Scores in Iowa Oaks

|
6th at PRM, $200,000GIII Iowa Oaks (1 1/16m)Winner: Lady Apple, f, 3 by Curlin

Lady Apple (L) & Ulele | Coady

Lady Apple justified even-money favoritism with a gritty score in the GIII Iowa Oaks Friday evening. Pressing Ulele from second through opening splits of :23.36 and :47.39, the bay drew on even turns with the pacesetter at the top of the stretch and the stage was set. The pair battled stride-for-stride down the lane, both refusing to yield, but Lady Apple pushed past a relentless Ulele in the dying strides for a narrow success.

Lady Apple took a few tries to break her maiden, finally breaking through at fifth asking at Oaklawn Feb. 7, and has been on a roll since. Following suit with an optional claimer score in Hot Springs Mar. 23, she won the GIII Fantasy S. there Apr. 12 and was most recently third in the GI Kentucky Oaks May 3.

Pedigree Notes:

Out of GSP Miss Mary Apples, Lady Apple is a half-sister to MSW Miss Red Delicious, who produced GSW Nootka Sound (Lonhro {Aus}) and SP Follow No One (Uncle Mo); and SW & GSP Dr. Diamonds Prize. Her 4-year-old half-sister Bint Huwaar (More Than Ready) was a $390,000 KEESEP yearling turned $1 million OBSAPR juvenile, purchased by Alessandro Marconi and Al Aasfa Racing. Miss Mary Apples is also responsible for the juvenile colt Apple Empire (Empire Maker), who is a maiden of three starts for breeder KatieRich Farms and trainer Mark Hubley. The 19-year-old mare did not produce a foal in 2018, but had a More Than Ready filly Feb. 24 of this year.
