Cross Traffic Filly Dominates Frizette

Jaywalk | Sarah K Andrew

Cash is King LLC and Leonard Green's Jaywalk (Cross Traffic) stretched out all the way from 5 1/2 furlongs to a mile to capture the GI Frizette S. at Belmont Sunday, punching a “Win and You're In” ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies starting gate and becoming the first graded stakes winner for her freshman sire (by Unbridled's Song). Hawked much of the way by heavily favored Covfefe (Into Mischief), the John Servis trainee proved resilient when that one faltered in the lane and bounded home to a convincing win.

Jaywalk quickly established control after the break beneath Joel Rosario and clicked off an opening quarter-mile of :22.63 with Nonna Madeline (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Covfefe applying moderate pressure to her outside. Still appearing well within herself through a half in :45.65 as Covfefe ranged up to her outside, she stiff-armed that rival in upper stretch and spurted clear to score decisively. 13-1 shot Brucia La Terra rallied late to complete the exacta over stablemate Cassies Dreamer, while Covfefe faded to fourth.

“When she was in front like that, and running so comfortable, I mean, they were running fast fractions, but they were doing it so easily,” Servis said. “She's a really nice filly. There was a couple of tough horses in here that have run better numbers but you really don't know how far they're going to go, and if they can sit on a hot pace like that and keep going. I really thought this filly would run all day, and I really didn't think that would be an issue for her.”

Jaywalk flashed speed and stayed on well to finish second behind Nonna Madeline in her June 23 debut at Monmouth and took a major step forward with the addition of Lasix at Parx July 24, going straight to the front and widening to a 7 1/2-length score over a sealed/muddy track. She continued her tour of the Mid-Atlantic Aug. 22 at Delaware with a rallying victory in the White Clay Creek S., defeating a trio of next-out winners in the process. Jaywalk prepared for the Frizette at her trainer's Parx Racing base with a steady series of works in recent weeks.

“I want to see what kind of numbers she ran, and how she comes out of this, and it's obviously a huge effort for her,” Servis said. “I don't want to see a huge improvement and wheel her right back in four weeks [at the Breeders' Cup]. We'll see. We'll see how it shapes up.”

Pedigree Notes:
