Calyx Succumbs To Hello Youmzain in the Sandy Lane

Odds of 2-13 leant an almost Frankel-like air to TDN Rising Star Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}) as he graced Haydock on Saturday, but there was no exhibition from one in the pink, green and white of Juddmonte this time as the G2 Sandy Lane S. produced a shock result courtesy of Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}). Successful in the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte in October, Jaber Abdullah's homebred had failed to stay the seven furlongs of the G3 Greenham S. on his return at Newbury Apr. 13 but was in his comfort zone here tracking the leader Royal Intervention (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). Taking command approaching the furlong pole as Robert Havlin loomed on Calyx, the 5-1 second favourite was soon waving goodbye to the G2 Coventry S. and G3 Pavilion S. winner as he surged to an impressive 3 1/4-length success. Calyx only just held on to second by a neck from Royal Intervention after hanging away his chance and tiring late.

Hello Youmzain met with a sole defeat at two at the hands of the subsequent G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains third San Donato (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in a course-and-distance conditions event on good-to-soft ground in September before his ready defeat of the fast Queen of Bermuda (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) at Maisons-Laffitte. Adam Ryan, assistant to father Kevin, said, “At the end of the day, we can't be afraid of one horse. We had to try the Greenham, to see if he stayed–you only get one crack at these Classics. It was pretty clear he didn't, so this was the next logical step. He's won two group twos now–all he's going to do is keep improving. He's been like that since day one–the more racing he gets, the more he's going to mature. We hope there's plenty to come and he's still learning the game and the [June 21 G1] Commonwealth Cup [at Royal Ascot] is the logical step.”

Havlin said of Calyx, “There was nothing there and when I asked him to quicken he almost ran like a horse having his first run, he was sticking his head up. One thing I can say is he wasn't giving a hard blow afterwards. I rode him at home about ten days ago and he absolutely flew. No horse has given me that feel since Kingman and I fully expected to come here and win by ten lengths, but we'll get him back and have a look at him. Hopefully there's something we can iron out.”

Calyx's trainer John Gosden was watching from The Curragh and believed the slick surface was mainly to blame for the favourite's reversal. “I don't think he was too happy on the ground, as he rolls his knee and was uncomfortable,” he explained. “He got a bump leaving the stalls and was set alight and so that and the ground was not a good combination. It is very quick there and we were hoping the rain would come last night.”

The unraced Spasha is becoming something of a broodmare extraordinaire, with the Listed Lansdown Fillies S. winner Zuhoor Baynoona (Ire) (Elnadim), Listed Prix Maurice Caillault third Saglawy (Fr) (Youmzain {Ire}) and G2 Gran Criterium, G3 Bavarian Classic and G3 Ittlingen Derby Trial winner and G1 Deutsches Derby third Royal Youmzain (Fr) (Youmzain {Ire}) under her auspices. From the family of Slip Anchor (GB), she also has a yearling colt by Dragon Pulse (Ire) and a filly foal by Dabirsim (Fr).
