Broken Vow Filly Graduates in Del Mar's Sorrento

Broken Vow | Pin Oak Stud

Champagne Room, a maiden coming into the GII Sorrento S., had no problem graduating on the class hike in this prep for the Sept. 3 GI Del Mar Debutante S. Bet down to 2-1 in her July 16 debut here, Champagne Room finished second with a bit of traffic trouble, earning a field-high 69 Beyer. Off as the public's choice in this spot, the bay came away smartly and stalked third, two to three lengths off of a :22.63 quarter. Advancing one spot outside of second choice Miss Southern Miss (More Than Ready) on the turn through a :45 flat half-mile, Champagne Room drifted a bit wide turning for home before hooking up with the pacesetter in early stretch. Those two locked horns until the sixteenth pole, where Champagne Room started to do the better work, pulling away late to graduate with a graded tally. Miss Southern Miss was well clear for the place. The winner was supplemented to the race for $2,000.

“It was a great idea by (my advisors) to supplement,” trainer Peter Eurton said. “They brought some things to my attention that this has been a very influential race for the Debutante, the Chandelier and others. So instead of me being conservative and putting bubble wrap around her and waiting for (the Debutante), we decided to go here. I loved the way she got away in the race. I loved the way she tracked. When my horse started to make that move around the turn, I felt fairly confident she'd go on.” Winning rider Mario Gutierrez added: “I had a good trip from the outside. I could see what was going on out there and I waited for my turn (to run). She fired for me. I've been getting on her in the mornings and she's been so sharp, training so well. I knew she'd run big.”

Selling for $70,000 as a KEENOV weanling, Champagne Room was a $55,000 RNA at the KEESEP sale before going under the hammer for $310,000 as an OBSAPR 2-year-old following a two-furlong breeze in :20 4/5.

Pedigree Notes:

The winner's dam is a half-sister to MSW Inhisglory (Pure Prize) and GSP Hat of Jacks (Cowboy Cal). Third dam Fancy Freda (Known Fact) was a GSW. Champagne Room's dam most recently produced a 2016 filly by Drosselmeyer and was bred back to Strong Mandate this term.
