Trainer David Jacobson, who happens to be Banishing's co-owner, already collected a pair of wins on the Arkansas Derby undercard, but his biggest conditioning feat came in the GIII Oaklawn Mile Stakes on Saturday.
Returning to one his favorite ovals, Banishing rattled off three wins in a row starting against optional claimers at Churchill Downs in late November, and then added an allowance score in Hot Springs Dec. 20, plus the Byerley Turk Overnight Stakes over course and distance Jan. 23. Last seen running a close second in the GIII Razorback Handicap Feb. 23, the chestnut was installed as the 8-5 second choice to GISW Saudi Crown here.
Shadowing the favorite from the bell, Banishing stuck close on the outside of the pacesetter into the first turn and up the backstretch. The gelding gave his opponent all he could handle around the far turn and entering the lane the pair continued to slug it out. Steadily though, the 5-year-old got the better of Saudi Crown and completed what was nothing short of a gritty performance.

Banishing's Oaklawn Mile win hands his venerable sire (Awesome Again) his 59th graded winner. The winner's dam, whose last registered foal is current 2-year-old Take the Helm (Astern {Aus]), was bred to Speaker's Corner and Ghostzapper for this spring. Banishing's second dam is MGSW Marietta (Machiavellian).
