Meloni (American Pharoah) came with a sustained run from the back of the pack and cleared off late to run her record to two-from-two with a handy success in the Catch a Glimpse Stakes, a prep for next month's GI Natalma Stakes.
Backed into strong favoritism off a convincing 1 1/4-length debut success sprinting over the local synthetic track at odds of 3-4 on June 27, Meloni was off to an awkward beginning and took a few strides to find her footing, but she was taken in hand by the visiting John Velazquez and was out of last as the field raced past the half-mile pole.
Snugly held on for the move into the final three-eighths of a mile, Meloni was steered out widest with two furlongs of the long Woodbine straight to traverse, wandered to the inside while making the lead and pulled away with a fair bit of authority.
The 68th worldwide stakes winner for her sire, Meloni is also the 63rd black-type winner out of a daughter of the recently pensioned War Front. Black Canary, whose female family includes Grade I winner Cat Moves (Tale of the Cat), was bred to Practical Joke and Nyquist this term.
