Alms Gives Godolphin a Second Straight Jimmy Durante

A firming second pick in the wagering, Godolphin's Alms (City Zip) took advantage of a box-seat trip and finished best to give her owner and trainer Michael Stidham a second consecutive victory in the GIII Jimmy Durante S. at Del Mar. Godolphin won the 2018 running with Elsa (Animal Kingdom).

Getting Lasix for the first time and drawn neatly in gate two, Alms hugged the fence from third, allowing others to do the dirty work ahead of her, while favored 'TDN Rising Star' Princesa Caroline (American Pharoah) was trapped out in midfield from gate 12 after securing a spot with cover three back and one out. Pulled out in upper stretch by Paco Lopez, Alms easily finished the task at hand, accounting for Laura's Light (Constitution). Princesa Caroline traveled well for the opening half-mile, but the response was a limited one when she was called on by Javier Castellano nearing the stretch. She gained inches in the final eighth of a mile, but was forced to settle for third.

Alms defeated a pair of next-out winners when graduating by 3 3/4 lengths in a Belmont turf sprint Sept. 19 and made it two wins from as many appearances with a highly impressive 1 1/4-length success in the GIII Matron S. over the same course and distance Oct. 5.

Pedigree Notes:

One of 30 graded winners for her late sire, Alms–whose dam won the Darley-sponsored G3 Prix de la Nonette during her racing days–has a yearling half sister by Street Boss who was sold in utero for $70,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November sale. Barren to Street Sense this season, Charity Belle was most recently bred to Justify.
