A. P. Indian Continues Divisional Dominance in Forego

A. P. Indian | Coglianese

A.P. Indian continued his impressive 2016 campaign with a decisive fourth straight victory in the Forego in a new stakes record time and stamped his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. Hammered down to even-money to keep the streak alive here, the gelding tracked from second early as double-digit longshot Chief Lion (Wildcat Heir) zipped through an opening quarter in :22.83 and a half in :45.35. Ranging up on the far turn, the bay swiftly took command in early stretch and sailed clear to make it five in a row.

“He's having a lot of fun at what he does,” said winning trainer Arnaud Delacour. “The race [Belmont Sprint Championship] at Belmont [was a turning point for him]. He came back so much more confident for some reason. Ever since, he has been improving and consistent. I told Joe [Bravo] nothing. I just asked him what he wanted to do and he told me what he wanted to do, and I said 'good luck.'”

As or whether or not A.P. Indian will take his all expenses paid trip to Santa Anita for the Breeders' Cup, Delacour said, “I will have to talk to the owner. We will map out a plan if it is what we want to do. He needs to bring us there. I just want to make sure he is still going well and happy. In that case, we will consider.”

A.P. Indian was victorious in three of his six starts in 2015, including the Decathlon S. at Monmouth and Parx's Donald Levine Memorial H. Off this board in this venue's Tale of the Cat S. last summer, he was sixth behind champion Runhappy (Super Saver) in a sloppy renewal of the GIII Phoenix S. at Keeneland Oct. 2. Crossing the wire second, but placed first in this year's Decathalon May 14, the 6-year-old successfully defended his title in the Donald Levine June 18 and scored his first graded victory in the GIII Belmont Sprint Championship July 9. The Green Lantern runner took his game to the next level last time with a win in this venue's GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. July 30.

Pedigree Notes…

A.P Indian is out of fellow Richard Masson homebred and three-time stakes winner Ender's Sister. The 15-year-old mare has also produced Its All Relevant (Hard Spun), third in Saratoga's GII Amsterdam S., and last year's GII Indiana Derby hero Tiz Shea D (Tiznow). Ender's Sister has a 2-year-old filly named Dragon Army (Giant's Causeway); a yearling filly by Distorted Humor; and had a colt by Noble Mission (GB) earlier this year. She was bred back to Pioneerof the Nile. Her full-sister On a Roll produced Doctor Mounty (Street Sense), who romped by a front-running 7 1/4-lengths in a Laurel allowance the same day A.P Indian won the Vanderbilt. That 3-year-old returned to be a close-up second in the Aug. 24 Grover 'Buddy' Delp Memorial S.
