Zindaya Gets First Graded Tally in Goldikova

Bob Edwards's bourgeoning eFive Racing, represented by GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner New Money Honey (Medaglia d'Oro) Friday, enjoyed another graded stakes winner in Arcadia when Zindaya captured the GII Goldikova S. on closing day at Santa Anita Sunday.

A two-time listed stakes winner for Regis Racing and trainer Christophe Clement last summer, Zindaya was purchased for $550,000 as part of the Regis dispersal at last year's Keeneland November sale. She returned in 2016 in the barn of Chad Brown, finishing second to the speedy Lady Shipman (Midshipman) in the May 1 License Fee S. before winning the June 9 Intercontinental S., both over the Belmont lawn. She was second in the Aug. 6 De La Rose S. at Saratoga and was coming off a runner-up effort behind stablemate Mrs McDougal (Medaglia d'Oro) when that one was allowed to coast on the lead in the Sept. 24 GIII Noble Damsel S.

Off as the even-money favorite here, Zindaya broke alertly and found herself in a good spot, covered up in third along the rail, not far off tepid splits of :23.43 and :47.47. Stuck in behind the frontrunner briefly in the stretch, the favorite angled out passing the eighth pole and rallied gamely between rivals to just nip Tiz a Kiss.

“She's our first-ever stakes winner,” Edwards said of Zindaya. “Javier has done a great job with her. Chad has done a great job with her. You saw her in the paddock. She looks like a true champ.”

Of the two graded stakes victories, Edwards added, “It's been a great weekend for us. It's been a great experience. This is my first time out here. It's been a pretty good year and winning this race makes a big difference.”

Pedigree Notes:

Out of Aristocratic Lady, Zindaya is a half-sister to Grade I stakes winner Western Aristocrat (Mr. Greeley). The 14-year-old Aristocratic Lady produced a filly by Malibu Moon in 2015, her most recent reported foal. Carrying that foal, she RNA'd for $350,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November the sale. The Malibu Moon filly sold for $275,000 at this fall's Keeneland September sale.
