It was a case of third time lucky in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen as X Y Jet (Kantharos) continued a fine evening for American-based trainers by making all the running for a determined success. Runner up in the race in 2016 and 2018, X Y Jet’s task was made easier with the scratching of fellow American sprinter Roy H (More Than Ready) earlier in the week and it was appropriate that Roy H’s part-owners Rockingham Ranch are also partners in X Y Jet. His trainer Jorge Navarro was confident his charge would be hard to beat and so it proved as he ground out success from the front under Emisael Jaramillo.

Not many horses got into the race and it was the Japanese runner Matera Sky (Speightstown) who gave the winner the most to do and try as he did he never looked like getting past X Y Jet, eventually falling short by 1 1/2 lengths. Imperial Hint (Imperialism) kept on for third while Promises Fulfilled (Shackleford) made it three American-trained horses in the first four. It was a first Group 1 win for the 7-year-old X Y Jet and he has been well handled by Jorge Navarro who has nursed the horse back to full fitness following a number of training injuries.

“I don’t know what I’m feeling right now, I guess it will hit me later on,” Navarro said post race. “I do feel a lot of pride in my horse. They knocked him and they forgot he lost twice here by a nose. But he did it today. He won the race and he was the best against the best horses here tonight.”

These thoughts were echoed by Brian Trump, representing Rockingham Ranch who said, “I can’t believe he did it. Defeat in the past has made this victory that much sweeter. Today, it was his time. It was obviously disappointing when Roy H came out, but when this horse is on his game, he’s very hard to beat in anything he contests. He looked very strong the entire way around, he was in the position he needed to be in, but seeing him cross that line was so exciting. He’s such a special horse and the team has done a tremendous job with him.”

Like Coal Front earlier in the day, X Y Jet has also won the GIII Mr. Prospector S. at Gulfstream, but on two occasions, in 2015 and in 2017, while his fitness has been honed this year in two starts at Gulfstream Park. He finished fourth in the Florida-bred Sunshine Millions Sprint S. on Jan. 19 on his return from a six-month absence before winning an allowance optional claimer in the slop there on Feb. 13.

Pedigree Notes

X Y Jet is the first Group 1 winner for his sire Kantharos who is also the sire of MGSW and now stallion Bucchero. His dam Soldiersingsblues (Lost Soldier) was a three-time winner and from seven foals she has produced five winners from five runners, including the stakes-placed Woman Soldier (Werblin). X Y Jet is by far the highest achiever in three generations of his family and the last reported progeny out of Soldiersingsblues is the unraced 4-year-old filly La Cuarta (Poseidon’s Warrior) who was purchased by Peter Miller for $87,000 at OBS in June of 2017.
