Winx To Gallop On Apollo Day

Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) will step out on Apollo S. day at Randwick on Saturday after all, with the mare set to participate in a race-simulating 1200 metre gallop between races with four stablemates.

The 6-year-old mare was set to start her season in the G2 Apollo S.-which she has won the last two years as part of her 22-race win streak-but connections opted to bypass that event and head straight to the G1 Chipping Norton S.-which she has also won the past two years-on Mar. 3 after regular rider Bowman was forced to miss the card due to successive careless riding suspensions.

The gallop will take place after race three, and Hugh Bowman will be fitted with a camera and microphone.

“This is an interesting way to show the general public a behind-the-scenes aspect of Winx,” said trainer Chris Waller. “It is obvious that people want to know more about her and it is hard to find new ways to be able to convey to people what she is like without repeating ourselves in the media or at the races, so this will certainly give an insight into what goes towards preparing a horse for a big race.”

“As we see in modern-day sport, especially on the television whether it be the 20/20 cricket or motor car racing, and as early as this week, the Super Bowl, the general public want new initiatives and new ways to connect with the sports they follow, so I am certainly looking forward to being part of this initiative,” Waller added.
