Wellabled Becomes First Stakes Winner for Shackleford

Wellabeled | Four Footed Fotos

“TDN Rising Star” Wellabled displayed an affinity for the Arlington synthetic with a second decisive score over that strip to become his freshman sire Shackleford's first stakes winner. Quickest away from the stalls, the heavy favorite ticked off opening splits of :23.42 and :46.08 while pressed along by Star Empire. Showing the way into the lane, the bay easily cruised clear to win for fun.

“The sky's the limit for this horse,” trainer Larry Rivelli said. “I'm not so sure about other surfaces, I took him to Saratoga and worked him on the dirt a couple of times and he didn't seem to like it, that's why I chose to run him on the turf. His breeding suggests he'll run long.”

Purchased for $340,000 at the OBS April sale after a quarter-mile breeze in :20.2, Wellabled earned the “TDN Rising Star” moniker after romping by 7 1/2 lengths in his five-furlong debut over this all-weather course July 9. Showing the way from the start when trying turf in Saratoga's Skidmore S. Aug. 19, he was run down late by Harlan's Harmony (Spring At Last) to finish second by a head.

Pedigree Notes…

Wellabled is the first stakes winner for his MGISW young sire Shackleford, who has a total of eight winners thus far. The juvenile is the third foal out of Expressive Diva, who did not produce a foal in 2015, but had a Tapizar colt Mar. 31 of this year. The half-sister to GISW Ringaskiddy (Slewsvescent) was bred back to Bodemeister.
