David Wachman, trainer of last year's G1 1000 Guineas winner and triple Group 1 winner Legatissimo (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), has announced he will hand in his training license at the end of the season.

“After much deliberation I have decided to hand in my trainer's licence at the end of this season,” said Wachman. “While not taken easily, the decision to retire will allow me to spend more time with my family as well as pursuing various other business interests. Over the last 20 years I have trained for many wonderful owners and I would like to extend my deepest gratitude and thanks to them as they have been absolutely central to the success that we have enjoyed here.

The nature of training is such that you have plenty of ups and downs but I've been lucky enough to have had many good days and train some top-class horses during that time. Also a big thank you goes to each and every one of my staff members for their unwavering loyalty, dedication and commitment and I wish them all the very best for the future.”

Wachman took out his license in 1996 at the age of 25 after spending stints with trainers Jessica Harrington, Michael Hourigan and Jim Bolger in Ireland; Bill Mitchell and Brian Mayfield Smith in Australia; and Jenny Pitman in England. He trained his first winner later that year in a hurdle race and his first winner on the flat came the following season. Wachman's first stakes win came in 2000 courtesy Rush Brook (Ire) (Pips Pride {GB}), and his first group win was supplied three years later by Venturi (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Wachman went on to win Group 1 races in five countries, his flagbearers including Legatissimo, who won last year's G1 Nassau S. and G1 Matron S. in addition to the Guineas; G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. winner Bushranger (Ire) (Danetime {Ire}); G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Again (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}); G1 Phoenix S. winners Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}) and Sudirman (Henrythenavigator); and last year's G2 Ribblesdale S. and GI EP Taylor S. winner Curvy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Wachman also trained the dams of this year's Group 1 winners The Gurkha (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Alice Springs (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), as well as Breeders' Cup winners Hit It A Bomb (War Front) and Magician (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and current standout juvenile Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
