Violence Filly Uses Late 'Burst' to Take Honeybee

Cosmic Burst | Coady

Cosmic Burst, a well-beaten third in a sloppy renewal of the Martha Washington S. Feb. 10, rebounded with a confident tally in the GIII Honeybee S. at Oaklawn Park Saturday. The bay filly broke well, but was content to let the aggressive Amy's Challenge take control of the early action. Cosmic Burst was closest to the free-wheeling pacesetter through fractions of :23.27 and :46.02. Amy's Challenge was in front by as many as 13 lengths, but Cosmic Burst and favored Red Ruby (Tiznow) were moving in tandem, reeling in the pacesetter down the lane. Red Ruby began toiling at midstretch, but Cosmic Burst was finding her best gear and surged to the lead in the last furlong to win going away.

The performance was redemption for the promising filly, who earned 50 points towards a berth in the GI Kentucky Oaks with her victory.

“She definitely broke better today [than in the Martha Washington],” said winning trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel. “And, we saw the filly we expected to see last time. You can probably blame the track a little bit for last time. She wasn't herself from the get-go that day for whatever reason. Hopefully, she's back on track.”

Cosmic Burst, who graduated second-time out at Keeneland last October, added a Churchill optional claimer Nov. 25 before concluding her juvenile campaign with a romping 5 1/4-length score in the Dec. 17 Trapeze S. at Remington Park. She chased home Red Ruby and Sassy Sienna (Midshipman) when third in the Martha Washington S. last time out.

Pedigree Notes:

Cosmic Burst is from the first crop of Grade I-winning sire Violence (Medaglia d'Oro) and became the stallion's first graded stakes winner Saturday. He was represented last year by graded stakes placed Barry Lee and Maurer Power, as well as this year's GIII Robert Lewis S. third-place finisher Ayacara (GB).

Pewter Stable purchased Cosmic Burst's dam Peggy Ring as a weanling for $3,500 at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Winter Mixed Sale. In foal to Winchill, the unraced mare sold for $2,000 at that same sale in 2016. Her colt by Danza sold for $5,000 as a weanling at last year's winter mixed sale.
