Upset In The Djebel As Myboycharlie Colt Makes All

Cheikeljack | Scoop Dyga

One of the lesser-fancied Classic hopefuls lining up here, Cheikeljack proved that in these extremely testing conditions simplicity pays as he made all to reward the enterprise of his rider Vincent Cheminaud. Sounding the horn with two six-length successes over this trip at Le Lion d'Angers in August and September, the bay showed signs of temperament when playing third fiddle to the Fabre trainee Candide (Fr) (Turtle Bowl {Ire}) in the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon again at this distance at Saint-Cloud in October. Tightened by a run this term, which resulted in an uninspiring fifth in the latter track's Listed Prix Omnium II trying a mile Mar. 20, he took immediate control as the likes of Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) and Vedevani (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) pulled in behind and cut a much more straightforward figure allowed his own way in front. As Ribchester veered sharply left to hinder the 19-10 favourite Vedevani with 150 metres remaining, which resulted in his demotion from second to fifth behind that rival, Cheikeljack also caused minor interference to Attendu as he battled to keep his lead but the stewards were in forgiving mood. “He is a very decent horse and when he was third in the Thomas Bryon, he did too much early on,” trainer Henri-Alex Pantall commented. “On his return, I am convinced that a mile is too far but he had the benefit of that run and liked the ground today. I'll have to see what the owner wants to do next, but as a mile is too far the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains has to be a question mark.”
