Officials at Santa Anita Park have announced a pair of new race conditions aimed towards stimulating entries and boosting pari-mutuel handle.

Coinciding with the opening of the winter/spring meeting Dec. 26, Santa Anita will write restricted maiden special weight races for 2- and 3-year-olds and will be open to homebred horses and horses that have been sold at public auction for $100,000 or less. Purse money will be the same as the non-restricted maidens.

The track will also card restricted claiming races of $20,000 or less for horses three years old and up for trainers who have 20 stalls or fewer.

“The goal with both of these race conditions is to try and open up our game to those owners and horsemen who are breeding, claiming and buying at auction, but often face limited opportunities to protect their investments while running in competitive spots,” said Santa Anita Vice President of Racing, Rick Hammerle. “We think these changes are going to be met enthusiastically by our fans and horsemen.”
