Uncle Lino Gives Uncle Mo Another BT Winner

Uncle Mo | coolmore.com

Uncle Lino became the 13th black-type winner for his successful young sire with a gritty front-running victory in the inaugural running of this race. Sent off the favorite, the bay colt jumped well and took them along and a reasonable clip, though he was never able to catch any sort of breather, as Rare Candy (Twirling Candy) shadowed his every move for most of the journey. The duo took the hairpin turn together, but although Rare Candy had dead aim and outside position through the lane, he could never quite claw past Uncle Lino, who stopped the clock in new track-record time of 1:40.82 for the 8 1/2 furlongs over a fast strip. The winner, a $52,000 KEESEP bargain, is out of Haysee, a full-sister to GISW Lady Joanne and a half-sister to GI Preakness S. hero and promising young stallion Shackleford (Forestry). Uncle Lino, second to Mor Spirit (Eskendereya) in the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. in February, was well-beaten in fourth behind Danzing Candy (Twirling Candy) in the GII San Felipe S. Mar. 12 and was exiting a distant third to Exaggerator (Curlin) in the GI Santa Anita Derby Apr. 9. “We wanted to be on the lead with him,” noted winning conditioner Gary Sherlock. “I was a little concerned because the fractions weren't that strong, but I guess they came home pretty well. We've been talking about the [May 21] Preakness. We'll see how he comes out of this race. We get an extra week from the [GI Kentucky] Derby horses. Somebody asked me if this horse should win today. I said, 'Well the horses that have been beating him are running in the Kentucky Derby, so I think he's got a pretty good chance.'''
