Turf Test for Tone Broke in Breeders'

Tone Broke | Michael Burns

L & N Racing's Tone Broke (Broken Vow) attempts turf for the first time in the final leg of Canada's Triple Crown–Saturday's Breeders' S. at Woodbine. A two-time winner at Remington Park last season, the Steve Asmussen pupil failed to fire in a pair of tries at Meydan. He resurfaced to be second to King for a Day (Uncle Mo) in Pimlico's Sir Barton S. May 18, and was third at double-digit odds behind front-running One Bad Boy (Twirling Candy) and Avie's Flatter (Flatter) in the Queen's Plate over the local synthetic June 29. The dark bay broke through in a big way last out, turning the tables on both of his Queen's Plate foes to annex Fort Erie's Prince of Wales S. by two lengths. While he's never before tried the grass, he certainly has the pedigree to handle it–dam Mendocino Beano (Smart Strike) was third in the GIII Ontario Colleen S. over the local lawn, and is also responsible for turf MSW and 'TDN Rising Star' Stallion Heiress (Exchange Rate). A half to Mendocino Beano produced none other than last year's champion turf male and older horse Mr Havercamp (Court Vision), while Tone Broke's third dam Trishyde (Nureyev) was a French MGSW and MGISP Stateside. Avie's Flatter boasts the most established turf form, having bested GI Belmont Derby hero Henley's Joy (Kitten's Joy) in Keeneland's GIII Transylvania S. Apr. 5. He was sixth in the GII American Turf S. at Churchill May 4 before his back-to-back runner-up finishes in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Josie Carroll will also saddle the lightly raced He's a Macho Man (Mucho Macho Man), who was fourth in both the Queen's Plate and Prince of Wales.
