French champion 3-year-old colt Trempolino (Sharpen Up {GB}–Trephine {Fr}, by Vice Regal), passed away at Haras du Mezeray on Monday, Jour de Galop reported. He was 34. Bred by part-owner Paul de Moussac's American arm, Mayland Stud in Kentucky, and owned by de Moussac and Summa Stable, the chestnut is best remembered as the winner of the 1987 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (video) in an 11-start career. Trained by Andre Fabre, Trempolino also saluted the judge in the G2 Prix Niel as a sophomore and accrued seconds in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Prix Lupin, as well as a third in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. In his lone venture outside of France, Trempolino found only Theatrical (Ire) (Nureyev) a half-length too good in the 1987 GI Breeders' Cup Turf. He originally retired to Gainesway Farm with earnings of $1,369,233.

Moved to de Moussac's Haras du Mezeray in 2000, Trempolino sired 1,045 foals good for 44 black-type winners. Valixir (Ire), Germany, Dernier Empereur, and Juvenia were all Group 1 winners, while Snow Polina captured the GI Beverly D. S. Stateside. Trempolino was pensioned in the fall of 2011.
