Tourist Visits the Winner's Circle in Fourstardave

TouristChelsea Durand

By a little more than $5,600 the second betting favorite for Saturday's rescheduled and newly upgraded Fourstardave H., Tourist sat a soft stalking trip off pacesetting King Kreesa (King Cugat) for the opening six furlongs, pressed by that one and held off a late bid from A Lot to earn the first Grade I victory of his career. In the process, the strapping 5-year-old was providing his dam with a second stakes winner in the previous 24 hours, following on the success of his 2-year-old half-brother Harlan's Harmony (Harlan's Holiday) in Friday's grassy Skidmore S.

The handsome dark bay, who defeated Ring Weekend (Tapit) in this track's restricted Sir Cat S. in 2014 and was runner-up to Adelaide (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in that year's GI Secretariat S., earned another Grade I placing when a neck third to Grand Arch in the Shadwell Turf Mile Oct. 3, but closed the year with an eighth in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile. Tourist kicked off his 2016 campaign back at Keeneland, rounding out the triple underneath Miss Temple City (Temple City) in the GI Maker's 46 Mile S. and was fourth in the nine-furlong GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic May 7 before cutting back to this trip to be beaten a half-length into second by Midnight Storm (Pioneerof the Nile) in the GI Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita June 4.

Drawn widest in this scratched-down sextet, Tourist was bounced away from there by Joel Rosario, exchanging bumps with his former barnmate A Lot, before settling just off the flank of King Kreesa, who was able to establish a modest tempo for the opening half-mile. Rosario went for Tourist midway on the turn and looked to have the pacesetter where he wanted him as they reached the top of the stretch. King Kreesa tried to put up a fight down inside, but it was to no avail, as Tourist drove past with a furlong to race and was never in serious danger from there. A Lot rallied from the tail to be second ahead of defending champion Grand Arch in third.

“It was important for a horse like him to [get a Grade 1 win],” commented trainer Bill Mott, winning the race for the third time. “He's been a good horse for us, multiple Grade 1-placed. To win the Fourstardave in Saratoga was very important. There have been some nice horses win it in the past and I'm sure we'll have some more in the future. But it was his day today.”

Pedigree Notes:
WinStar Farm acquired Unbridled Melody, a full-sister to 2006 GI Hopeful S. third Unbridled Express, for $325,000 in foal to Bluegrass Cat at the 2007 Keeneland November sale. She has since produced two other full black-type winners in addition to Tourist–the 13th Grade I winner for his sire–and Harlan's Harmony, including SW & GSP Michael With Us (Bluegrass Cat) and Mountain Music Man (Bluegrass Cat), winner of the 2015 Awad S. at Belmont Park last fall. Tourist's third dam, My Sea Castles (Polish Navy), is a half-sister to champion Japanese sprinter/miler Hishi Akebono and to G1 Darley July Cup hero Agnes World. Unbridled Melody most recently produced a filly by WinStar inmate Speightstown.
