In receipt of a weight break from his older rivals, I'm Your Father sat an inside trip and outgamed Dubai-raced Triple Nine for a mild upset in this most prestigious local affair.
I'm Your Father broke running from gate one and settled in a distant third as defending champion Beolmaui Kkum (Put It Back) and Success Story (Kor) (Peace Rules) fought out the early fractions. Triple Nine emerged from midpack and got first run on the front-runners, but I'm Your Father remained inside and the two came to settle it into the final furlongs separated by many yards. I'm Your Father was clear into the last 100m and, though Triple Nine was gaining inches, the wire came first. Favored Clean Up Joy (Purge), a notoriously slow horse from the stalls, was away without incident, but he had little to offer late and finished ninth. According to the korearacing.live blog, he returned with a swollen right hind leg.
The Mayor's Cup is one of a handful of Korean races granted black-type as Part II races in the International Cataloguing Standards Book. As such, I'm Your Father–one of 33 purchases by K.O.I.D. at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling sale–is the 65th stakes winner (third outside of North American) for 20-year-old Tiznow and is out of a half-sister to Tiznow's Grade I-winning son Gemologist as well as SW Clear Destiny (Deputy Minister). Clear Thinking produced a colt by Animal Kingdom in 2016, then was purchased by K.O.I.D. for $17,000 in foal to that sire at last year's Keeneland November sale. VIDEO
