Timber Town Fundraiser Showcases Top Mares

Plum Pretty with Mandy Pope | Michelle Pitts

Cathy and Wayne Sweezey held a fundraiser at their Timber Town Stables in Lexington, Kentucky for the Bluegrass Land Conservancy May 1. The highlight of the event, which attracted around 50 paying guests, was a presentation and parade of five celebrity broodmares boarded at Timber Town and belonging to their friend and client Mandy Pope and her Whisper Hill Farm. First on show was Grade I winner and producer Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song), with her 2018 colt foal by Tapit. She was followed by dual Grade I winner Plum Pretty (Medaglia d'Oro), who has a Curlin filly at her side and is pregnant to champion Arrogate (Unbridled's Song). Two-time champion female sprinter Groupie Doll (Bowman's Band) was shown in her paddock, with her colt foal of April 19 by Tapit. Horse of the Year Havre de Grace (Saint Liam) then entered the ring and will be covered by Tapit again in 2018. The closing act was performed by dual Eclipse champion Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro), purchased for Whisper Hill Farm in November 2017 and now in foal to Arrogate.

Mandy Pope flew in from her home in Florida and joined the guests in photo ops and handing carrots and treats to the mares. All proceeds from ticket sales and a silent auction of their five halters will go to the Bluegrass Land Conservancy, which, in association with local government, seeks to control urban sprawl in Central Kentucky by persuading landowners to protect their farms permanently from development.
