Three More Horses Test Positive for EHV-1 at Fair Grounds

Three additional horses tested positive for equine herpes Tuesday at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, the latest in a string of positive tests at the New Orleans oval. All three horses were positive for EHV-1 non-neurogenic type, also called the “wild type” strain.

A Merrill Scherer trainee stabled in Barn 4 and a Kenneth Hargrave trainee stabled in Barn 47 each returned a positive test after originally returning negative results Jan. 7. Meanwhile, a horse trained by Tim Glyshaw in Barn 30 developed a fever late Monday night and returned a positive test after having blood pulled Tuesday. All three barns have been placed under mandatory 14-day quarantines from the date of the positive tests.

Two more horses in Barn 36 tested positive for EHV-1 Saturday, adding to a growing list of barns under quarantine that has included Barn 14 and the track's receiving barn. Horses are currently prohibited from leaving or entering the Fair Grounds property.
