The Factor Colt Charges Late to Capture Illinois Derby

American Equistock's Multiplier (The Factor) came flying late to deny 9-5 favorite Hedge Fund (Super Saver) by a head in Saturday's GIII Illinois Derby at Hawthorne. It was another 4 3/4 lengths back to It's Your Nickel (Dialed In) in third.

Away well from his rail draw, the 4-1 shot raced in fifth while saving all the ground through early fractions of :23.47 and :47.24. The aforementioned GIII Sunland Derby third-place finisher, placed in a tracking second for most of the way, made his move on the far turn and kicked for home in command. But Multiplier had other ideas and came charging on the outside in deep stretch to collar and pass Hedge Fund in the final strides.

Multiplier, trained by Brendan Walsh, made three previous career starts all going two turns at Fair Grounds. A rallying third as the 5-2 favorite behind the reopposing Hollywood Handsome (Tapizar) when unveiled over a muddy Fair Grounds strip Jan. 21, Multiplier missed by just a neck when second to Souper Tapit (Tapit), who was named a 'TDN Rising Star,' Feb. 18. The Triple Crown nominee earned his diploma by 1 3/4 lengths last time Mar. 18.

Pedigree Notes:

Trippi Street, a nine-length debut winner at Hawthorne for Darrell and Evelyn Yates, added placings in the 2005 GIII Pocahontas S. and the following term's Safely Kept S. at Arlington. Multiplier is her most recent produce. Trippi Street, bred in Florida by Centaur Farms, went through the ring twice since the conclusion of her racing career. She first brought $220,000 from Lance Robinson at the 2006 FTK November Sale, then attracted a $100,000 bid from Mark Stansell at the 2010 KEENOV sale.
