Temple Victory For Invincible Spirit's Profitable

Profitable noses out Mecca's Angel | Racing Post

Building on his return success in Newmarket's G3 Palace House S. over this trip Apr. 30, Profitable battled to upstage last year's G1 Nunthorpe S. heroine Mecca's Angel in a stirring finish at a rain-affected Haydock. First rising to prominence when beating Tendu (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the subsequent G1 Haydock Sprint Cup runner-up Strath Burn (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) in the Listed Westow S. also at this distance at York in May, the bay was runner-up to Waady in the Listed Scurry S. staying at five at Sandown in mid-June prior to finishing fifth in the G1 Commonwealth Cup over an extra furlong at Royal Ascot just six days later. Back at five for York's Nunthorpe in August and the G3 Prix du Petit Couvert at Longchamp the following month, he was 10th and fifth in those affairs which meant his starting price for the Palace House was an inflated 20-1. Still value in this betting market, Profitable was always traveling with real purpose under Adam Kirby tracking the pace set by the tearaway Justineo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and was committed as that pace collapsed with over a furlong remaining. Gaining a slight edge over Mecca's Angel passing that marker, he held his advantage while drifting left and taking her on to the rail which led to an enquiry. “I got there soon enough today, but he put his head down,” his rider said. “He's improving all the time. He was a boy last year and is a man now. He's got speed to burn and is a proper sprinter, but is still very babyish and wasn't doing a tap in front.” Trainer Clive Cox added, “We were very concerned when it rained as much as it did and it always walks better than it rides. He is better on better ground, so I'm so thrilled he's done it like that. We had believed he'd improved for the run in the Palace House and he's a very special horse. All credit to Mecca's Angel, but I think on better ground he will power away from her. He eats and sleeps at home and is a star, so it's onwards and upwards. The [G1] King's Stand [S. at Royal Ascot June 14] is the plan.” Mecca's Angel, who almost administered a kick to the winner behind the start, is also on course for that contest, ground-permitting. “She got carried across the track, but it was a neck at the line and she ran a blinder and will come on for the run,” trainer Michael Dods said. “She could have done with a lead for longer, but she's run well. If we get cut in the ground at Royal Ascot, she'll be there.” Click for the Racing Post result or the free Equineline.com catalogue-style pedigree. Video, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
