As the trainer of Izarra's second dam Bayakoa, Ron McAnally is well acquainted with this filly's family, and while Izarra is a long way from approaching the level of her famous relative, she apparently inherited at least some of Bayakoa's talent. With McAnally on an 0-for-21 streak with first-timers and sporting a worktab that revealed little, Izarra was let go at 16-1 odds. Allowed to caboose the field up the backstretch, she made a steady advance into contention going into the turn, then, once given the cue by jockey Joe Talamo, launched an eye-catching four-wide move that propelled her to the lead in upper stretch. Izarra leveled off beautifully and strode away from the field to take it by 3 3/4 lengths while being kept to task. Fellow firster Masterful Miss (Mizzen Mast) was second at 7-1 odds.
