'Tara' Crowned at Doomben

Tycoon Tara | Racing Queensland

Eyeing her first win at the highest level, Peter and Paul Snowden's Tycoon Tara duly saluted at 18-1 in the final Group 1 race of the Australian calendar, the A$500,000 G1 Tattersalls Tiara over 1350 metres at Doomben Saturday. Taking full advantage of 1.70 favourite In Her Time's tardy beginning, the 6-year-old hustled straight to the head of affairs while pressured by rivals to her outside. Clinging to the rails, the hooded bay stuck to her guns and stole a march on her foes 300 metres out under a canny ride by hoop Kerrin McEvoy. Held together in deep stretch as In Her Time let down in the centre, it was the Waterhouse and Bott runner Prompt Response who was doing the best work late, cutting down Tycoon Tara's winning margin to a head, just a length to the good of In Her Time.

“She put a few on end there last preparation, she's been a little bit below her best first couple of runs back, but I rode her a bit too cute last time and got cluttered up on the rail,” McEvoy told Racing.com, who was winning his second Tiara and ninth Group 1 of the season. “Today, Peter and Paul said ride a positive race and, I must say, I was pretty happy at the 600 and I was happier at the 400. Full credit to the mare, she's done a great job.”

“She's done a great job,” said Peter Snowden. “I'm really glad for Tony [Krushka], too, because I was prepared to pull the pin on her after last start–I thought she didn't want to compete anymore–and I was a bit downcast on her performances. But I saw her last week and I thought it was the best I'd seen her look for a long time this preparation and she carried that into today.”

Originally entered in the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale as lot 639, Tycoon Tara was withdrawn with an eye to on an elusive Group 1 victory before going to the paddocks. She rattled off three group victories during the first half of the season, including the G2 Missile S. at Randwick in August, the G3 Bob Ingham Show County quality later that month and in the Rosehill's G2 Golden Pendant at the end of September from a five-start spring campaign. Runner-up to G1 Flight S. heroine First Seal (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the G2 Tristarc S. over 1400 metres at Caulfield Oct. 15, Tycoon Tara was unplaced in four runs this season prior to her Tiara win. She rolled a pair of sevens in the G1 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup May 27 and in the G2 Dane Ripper S. behind Prompt Response over course and distance June 10.

Pedigree Notes…

The fourth top-shelf winner for her Group 2-winning sire following on the heels of 'TDN Rising Star' Capitalist (Aus)'s 2015 G1 Golden Slipper victory, Music Magnate (NZ)'s G1 Doomben 10,000 win last year and 2016 G1 Manawatu Sires' Produce S. heroine Luna Rossa (NZ), Tycoon Tara was scooping her sixth group score in the Tiara. Bred in Victoria by co-owners Tony Krushka, a former trainer, and R Pierce and out of their four-time winner Mosstara (Aus), Tycoon Tara's female line arrived Down Under with third dam Finest Star (Pia Star). The third foal from her dam, who passed away in 2014, Tycoon Tara's half-brother The Passage (Aus) (Ilovethiscity {Aus}), a foal of 2013, has won twice to date. Graded winner Dance D'Espoir (Northern Dancer), MSW Kate's Intent (Intentionally), and English/Irish champion juvenile colt Godswalk (Dancer's Image), who landed the G1 King's Stand S., are also in the extended family.
