CUPID (c, 3, Tapit–Pretty 'n Smart {GSP}, by Beau Genius) was backed down to even-money in this first route attempt, and ran to the public's opinion to reveal yet another promising sophomore in trainer Bob Baffert's arsenal. Fourth going six furlongs at Los Alamitos Racecourse Dec. 20, the $900,000 KEESEP yearling was second over just 5 1/2 panels here Jan. 9.
He had recorded three sharp works since that effort, and was content to stalk the pace out wide here through opening splits of :23.98 and :48.62. Spinning wide as he asserted into the lane, the grey got his feet under him and leveled off very nicely to stretch his margin of victory to a facile six lengths. Pacesetter Inhibition (Street Sense) held on for second. The winner is a half to Heart Ashley (Lion Heart), MGSW, $395,896; Ashley's Kitty (Tale of the Cat), GSW, $349,268; and Indianapolis (Medaglia d'Oro), SW, $127,200. His dam is a half to the useful MGSW turfer Hostess (Chester House). Lifetime Record: 3-1-1-0, $47,500. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
