Talented Sophomore Montauk Injured in Breeze, Euthanized

Montauk | Viola Jasko

Montauk (Medaglia d'Oro–Indian Vale, by A.P. Indy), who turned heads with an 11 1/4-length debut romp at Belmont last October, was euthanized Thursday after fracturing his shoulder during a breeze over the Belmont training track. The news was first reported by Daily Racing Form. Acquired for $850,000 at OBS April, the sophomore colt was owned by Bob LaPenta, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Twin Creeks Racing and Bridlewood Farm and conditioned by Todd Pletcher. The 'TDN Rising Star' had only made one start, and was knocked off the Derby trail earlier this year with a throat issue. “We are all heartbroken,” Eclipse's Aron Wellman said when asked to confirm the news Thursday.
