Legislate (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}–Champers {SAf}, by Restructure {Ire}), the 2014 Equus Horse of the Year in South Africa, has been retired from racing and will enter stud for the 2016 breeding season at Mrs. Gaynor Rupert's Drakenstein Stud under the Freeman Stallions banner.
Bred by Cheveley Stud, Legislate was purchased by Newbury Racing for just R100,000 (about US$12,880) at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale and was campaigned by that entity in partnership with Drakenstein and Jack Mitchell.
Upset winner of the 2014 G1 Cape Derby at Kenilworth, Legislate returned from a three-month freshening to add the G2 KRA Guineas at Greyville and the G1 Daily News 2000 S. four weeks later. Promoted from second to the victory over his elders in the prestigious G1 Vodacom Durban July S., the bay was named that year's champion 3-year-old colt and champion middle-distance horse in addition to Horse of the Year. In his home region in the Cape, Legislate was a two-time Horse of the Year, champion 3-year-old colt and champion middle-distance horse.
Sidelined via injury after the July, he added wins at four in the G2 Green Point S.–in Kenilworth track-record time–and registered the final victory of an illustrious career in the G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge S. last June. Also South Africa's champion miler of 2015, Legislate retires with seven wins from 19 trips to the post and earnings of R5,788,600 (US$521,889).
A yearling full-sister to Legislate was sold for R700,000 (US$48,580) at the BSA National Yearling Sale last month. A stud fee for Legislate will be announced at a later time.
