Songbird Finds Soft Spot in Del 'Cap

Two-time champion filly Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) will compete in what looks like the closest thing to a walkover you'll ever see in a Grade I race when she lines up in Saturday's Delaware H. Almost 13-for-13 if not for a nose defeat to future Hall of Famer Beholder (Henny Hughes) in last November's GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, the 'TDN Rising Star' returned to the races at Belmont June 10 to comfortably annex the GI Ogden Phipps S. While her five foes consist of mostly optional claiming types, Songbird will take on another Grade I winner, albeit one who she's already trounced twice. Weep No More (Mineshaft) upended last April's GI Ashland S. at Keeneland as a 30-1 outsider over the likes of subsequent GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss) and GISW Carina Mia (Malibu Moon), but she's failed to hit the board in her next five tries. Those outings included a distant fifth and fourth behind Songbird in last summer's GI Coaching Club American Oaks and GI Alabama S. She was last seen checking in sixth in the GII Fleur de Lis H. at Churchill June 17, but will be equipped with blinkers for the first time here. Third choice on the morning line at 8-1 is Martini Glass (Kitalpha). She completed a three-race win streak with a 7 3/4-length score in a Tampa turf starter allowance Apr. 26, and just missed in the local Obeah S. June 10.
