Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro), undefeated champion juvenile filly of 2015 and recent winner of the GII Las Virgenes S. [video], will make her next start in the GIII Santa Ysabel S. at Santa Anita Mar. 5, owner Rick Porter confirmed on his Fox Hill Farm Facebook page Tuesday.
“Jerry Hollendorfer and I have decided to run in the [Santa] Ysabel S. At Santa Anita on Mar. 5,” the post said. “This will give us a month between the Las Virgenes and the [Apr. 9 GI] Santa Anita Oaks. This should fit just right for the [May 6 GI] Kentucky Oaks without any hiccups. I always worry about hiccups but that is part of this exhilarating sport.”
Songbird kicked off her 2016 campaign with a dominant 6 1/2-length score in the Feb. 6 Las Virgenes to follow up a 2-year-old season that included three Grade I victories in the Del Mar Debutante, Chandelier S. and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The dark bay has worked twice since her recent victory, most recently drilling five furlongs in 1:00.80 [20/91] Sunday morning in Arcadia.
