'Smart' Targets Breeders' Cup

Smart Call | Liesl King

Mauritzfontein homebred Smart Call (SAf) (Ideal World), a winner of three races at the highest level in her native South Africa including Saturday's G1 J&B Met over males, enters quarantine later this month for an overseas campaign, with her long-term goal the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita Nov. 4-5, reported the Sporting Post. The Alec Laird-trained Smart Call has already earned an automatic berth in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf on the back of a score in the G1 Paddock S. at Kenilworth Jan. 9, one start prior to her romp in the J&B Met over same day G1 Queen's Plate victor Legal Eagle (SAf) (Greys Inn). The latter had gained a berth in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile with that victory.

“We plan to get her to England in June when she will stay at Mary Slack's Abington Place stables in Newmarket with me as the trainer,” Laird told Sporting Post. “We haven't yet decided whether she should have her prep races in England. France would also be a possibility although America might offer a softer option. On the other hand it might make more sense to travel to America with the other UK horses going for the Breeders' Cup. But we now know that we have the best horse in South Africa to send there.”
