Sistercharlie Tops Brown Trifecta in Jenny Wiley

Sistercharlie | Coady

When last she was spotted on a racetrack, Peter Brant's Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) was the creme filling between a pair of Chad Brown stablemate cookies in the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational last July. Making her first appearance since in Saturday's GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley S., the components of the cookie were the same but the results a bit different, as the French import came with a stinging turn of speed in the final furlong to top a stable 1-2-3 at Keeneland, beating home Fourstar Crook (Freud) and Off Limits (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}).

Void of early speed and in receipt of first-time Lasix, Sistercharlie flanked Off Limits passing under the wire for the first time, then settled in a ground-saving spot just on the back of her stablemate worse than midfield as Dona Bruja (Arg) (Storm Embrujado {Arg}) did the dirty work up front pushed along by La Coronel (Colonel John). Shuffled back to about fourth-last with three furlongs to race, Sistercharlie rode the rails around the far turn and was the chief beneficiary when Off Limits floated a bit wide nearing the quarter pole. Therefore gifted an inside run into the final three-sixteenths of a mile, she pushed away from the fence at the furlong grounds–causing an ultimately inconsequential chain reaction to her outside–hit the front with 100 yards to travel and came away to a convincing success. Fourstar Crook, second last into the second turn, dove to the inside of Off Limits at the eighth pole and kept on well to earn second money.

“She's really matured and this was really a team effort,” said Brown, winning the Jenny Wiley for the second time (Ball Dancing {Exchange Rate}, 2014). After her [last] race last year, she got really sick on us. She had a lung infection that turned real bad. We rested her and [owner] Peter Brant was very, very patient to give her all that time. My staff did a tremendous job bringing her back after such a lengthy layoff.”

Sistercharlie raced in the colors of Mme Jacques Cygler through the first four starts of her career, including a one-length success in the G3 Prix Penelope last April, then carried Brant's silks to a runner-up effort at 12-1 behind Senga (Blame) in the G1 Prix de Diane over an extended 10 furlongs at Chantilly last June. She was the 7-4 favorite for her stateside debut in the Belmont Oaks and nearly overcame a wide ride into the stretch, but ultimately went down by a neck to New Money Honey (Medaglia d'Oro) with Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) third. The latter also returned from a layoff Saturday to win the Plenty of Grace S. at Aqueduct.

Pedigree Notes:

Sistercharlie is the fourth worldwide Group 1/Grade I winner for her sire and second in this country, joining GI Beverly D. S. victress Euro Charline (GB). Jameka (Aus) and Peggy Jean (Aus) notched their top-level scores Down Under. She is the 18th G1/GI winner produced by a daughter of Galileo. Starlet's Sister, a full-sister to G3 Prix Cleopatre winner Leo's Starlet, is also a half-sister to Anabaa's Creation (Ire) (Anabaa), a SW & G1SP in France and runner-up in the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. in this country. Starlet's Sister is the dam of the unraced 3-year-old filly My Sister Nat (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}), the 2-year-old colt Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and a yearling colt by Charm Spirit (Ire).
