Silent Sedition Earns Maiden Group 1

Silent Sedition has been knocking on the door of a Group 1 victory for the better part of a year, and the 4-year-old filly–a A$45,000 yearling purchase who has now bankrolled nearly A$1-million–at last achieved that feat in Friday evening's G1 William Reid S. at Moonee Valley. It was also the maiden Group 1 win for Silent Sedition's rider Katelyn Mallyon and trainer Andrew Noblet. Dropping back to fifth, 2 1/2 lengths off the lead, as the G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Sheidel (Aus) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) took up the running and Star Turn saved ground on the fence, Silent Sedition was three-wide around the first bend. She began to make up ground traveling down the side of the course approaching the second turn, and was one of four horses across the track as they straightened for home. Star Turn on the inside grabbed the lead, but was run down by Silent Sedition passing the 50 metre mark with Hellbent unrelenting on her outside.

The 22-year-old Mallyon, who became the first woman to ride a Group 1 winner at Moonee Valley and comes from a family of jockeys, said, “I just can't believe it. I'm just so thrilled. I'm just so glad I've been able to win a Group 1 for the Mallyon name– one so rich in racing history. She is such a wonderful ride–she fights like a tiger. She doesn't want to get beaten and there's big things in store for her.”

Silent Sedition has not been off the board in over two years–the worst finish of her career, coincidentally, coming over this track in the 2015 G2 Fillies Classic S. when fourth–and she notched her first Group 1-placing when second in last May's Schweppes Oaks. She won the G3 Summoned S. over 1500 metres last November, and had built back up to that trip this campaign when a last-out second, beaten a short head, in Rosehill's G1 Coolmore Classic on Mar. 11. Noblet said that, because of the drop back in trip, he wasn't expecting a win on Friday.

“She's an absolute ripper,” Noblet said. “I didn't expect too much tonight to be honest, coming back from a mile and coming back from Sydney so to do that is quite unbelievable. After she came home she'd done so well I said to the owner she would need another run and this looked the only suitable race to fit. She'd only been to the Valley once before and ran fourth and she's never finished worse than fourth in her life–she's an unbelievable talent this mare.”

Pedigree Notes…

Silent Sedition is the best of six foals produced by her unraced dam Fiorentina, who is herself a half-sister to G1 Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). They are out of the G1 Coolmore Filly & Mare Classic winner Porto Roca (Aus) (Barathea {Ire}), who is a half-sister to another top-level winner in Bluebird The Word (Aus) (Bluebird). Fiorentina has a yearling colt by Gingerbread Man (Aus) and produced a colt foal by Snippetson (Aus) last year.
