Arriving at the Northern Horse Park just moments beforehand, natural foods entrepreneur Takaya Shimakawa jumped into action immediately, grabbing an elegant darkᅠbay colt by Deep Impactᅠ(Jpn) for ᆬ170 million (about $1,666,667) early in the July 8 session. “I think I'm very lucky to make it,” said a smiling Shimakawa while surrounded by Japanese media. “This is a Derby-type horse.” Consigned by Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm, the colt is the first foal of American GI winner Persistently (Smoke Glacken), a granddaughter of Phipps Stable's champion Heavenly Prize (Seeking the Gold).
