Shackleford Filly Runs Up the Score in Schuylerville

Dream It Is | Sarah K Andrew

Dream It Is (Shackleford), dismissed at 9/2 off a romping victory in Woodbine's My Dear S. June 24, proved she could more than just handle the dirt with an absolutely dominant victory in Saratoga's GIII Schuylerville S. on Saratoga's opening day card Friday. Latched on to a pair of pacesetters in third early, she advanced closer after an opening quarter in :21.99 and was just cruising as she seized command leaving the bend. Pilot Luis Contreras peeked back for competition, asked his mount to quicken and it was all over. Despite traveling awkwardly and drifting in in the stretch, the bay put a nine-length chasm between her and Best Performance (Broken Vow) at the wire. Stainless (Flatter) filled out the trifecta after traveling sluggishly early, while race favorite Snowfire (Tapit) was fourth. The winner and her connections were featured earlier this week in a story by TDN editor-in-chief Jessica Martini.

“She made it really nice and easy,” said Contreras. “She had a really nice and strong gallop. She made it very comfortable. She's got a lot of speed and likes to go. Today she was nice and relaxed. I was waiting, and every time I let her go, she would open up. I did not have a problem with her.”

Dream It Is broke her maiden at first asking in box-to-wire fashion going 4 1/2 panels on the Woodbine Tapeta May 27, and jumped up sharply on the Beyer Speed Figure scale to a field's best 84 for her 4 3/4-length victory in the five-furlon My Dear. The fifth finisher from the My Dear, Presage (Jimmy Creed), returned to break her maiden by daylight at Presque Isle July 16.

“This is why we brought Luis here,” said trainer Barbara Minshall. “He's very confident and he's a very good rider. We wouldn't have done it any other way. He gave her a great ride and we knew her ability coming in but she really showed another gear today. We're going to talk after this race [whether to stay on the dirt or not] and see where we should go next. Obviously, she deserves a little break right now. She's just a baby but we can look into it. She's not a Canadian-bred, she's a Kentucky-bred. The 2-year-old program in Canada is pretty restricted unless you run on the grass. I don't know if we're going to explore that.”

Dream It Is was the first runner at Saratoga for Minshall since 1999. She had not won a graded stakes race south of the border since Mt. Sassafras annexed the 1997 GI Gulfstream Park H.

“It's amazing, what can I say? To win a race and to win it like that,” she said. “We came with a horse that we thought was a good filly and had a shot, but I can't say expected her to run as good as she did. It's ultimately the owner's decision of where we'll go next. I can't say the [Sept. 2 GI] Spinaway for certain but it's definitely a maybe.”

Pedigree Notes:

Dream It Is was one of three horses acquired last year by a newly formed partnership consisting of Andrew, Greg and David Hudson. Her first two dams are unraced, but her third dam is the legendary Bosra Sham (Woodman), a multiple champion in Europe, full-sister to European champion 2-year-old Hector Protector and a half to G1 French Two Thousand Guineas heroine Shanghai (Procida). She has a yearling full-sister and weanling full-brother.
